Visionary Gift from Susan and Henry Samueli and Media Reactions

We were thrilled to learn about Susan and Henry Samueli’s $200 million gift to the University of California, Irvine. As shared by UCI, the “far-reaching donation – the seventh-largest to a single public university – positions UCI as a bold, new leader in population health, patient care, education, and research.”

Not surprisingly, their generosity was met by some skepticism in certain media channels. CHI Founding Education and Outreach Advisor John Weeks’ inspiring Huffington Post blog addresses the concerns about criticisms of integrative medicine that are not based in evidence. He shares some of the policy decisions taken by the National Academy of Medicine, Joint Commission, and more, on integrative medicine practices for treating pain and other ailments. We encourage you to read John’s thoughtful analysis and the complete UCI announcement. The current investment and resultant backlash make it clear –  we must continue to educate our colleagues and patients on the evidence base behind holistic and integrative medicine practices.

To Susan and Henry, thank you for all that you do! We look forward to supporting your vision at UCI.
